Katherine Suzette’s Manuscript Wishlist
Fiction
Age categories:
YA, NA, Adult, and potentially kids for the right book + author
Type of book:
Standalones, series, epics, short stories, novels, novellas, and graphic novels
Genres:
Mystery, action, adventure, fantasy, cozy, sci-fi, historical fiction, and all the sub-genres
Elements I actively look for (not required, just desired):
Medium to fast pacing, although slow-build arcs are welcome (ie. emotional or romantic slow-burns) alongside other arcs
Witty banter, sass, and/or striking character personalities
Friendships, mentor characters, and other positive relationships
Thoughtful, purposeful interiority
Diverse characters (lifestyles, backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, opinions, etc.)
Characters who actively make life decisions instead of simply being swept away by plot
Characters over 25/30 living their best lives as if they were 17 in a werewolf rom-com
Character development (I can help with it, but authors have to be on-board)
Dragons and other great sentient creatures
Puzzle-solving, enemies to lovers, friendships-only, morally grey mc or protagonist, hero’s journey, good mentor/s, unlikely allies, Pride and Prejudice retellings of any kind
Plot twist (at least for the characters)
Authorial style elements I find compelling:
Unique authorial voice
Genius plots and other arcs
Obvious thought given to the audience
Clear consciousness of the power of a book’s contents on a reader’s brain
Interested in and excited for editorial feedback that elevates their manuscript
Notes:
I will edit any spice or sweetness level or lack thereof, no holds barred on the versions of such, so long as it does not fall into the categories listed in my “will not edit” section.
I will NOT edit:
Screenplays - I get cross-eyed and confused even with my beloved Shakespeare
FULL books of poetry (I like some, but a whole book loses me)
Depressing books with no hope or resolution or positive character development
Books in which the plot and characters matter less than the flowery prose
Gaslighting and major plot-related miscommunications that are never resolved
Books written solely for the purpose of erotic scenes (ie. erotica and beyond)
General Trauma-Ever-Afters (ie., no healthy development or resolutions)
Non/con, dub/con, or trauma/abusive scenes of any kind that are not used as tools to develop plot or character arcs in an, eventually, positive way
I will, however, be happy to discuss your manuscript if you’re not sure if these labels would fit it or not. If after a discussion I believe that it is a fit after all, I will offer my services. If your book is not a fit, I will be honest and in some cases I will even be able to recommend a fellow editor who would enjoy editing your book!
I don’t specialize in a single genre because my special skills are widely applicable.
What I love and look for in books to edit is very specific, though.
If your book contains any of the following elements, I would love to chat!
Non-fiction:
What I’m looking for:
Authors who care about their book’s impact on readers’ minds, lives, and hearts
Unique authorial voice (I can tell you if it’s coming through in a sample edit or manuscript evaluation)
Well-conceived, unique subject or perspective
Well-conceived advice or subject material being presented
Provides benefits to readers (educational or thought-provoking in some way)
Thought-provoking ideas, concepts, perspectives, or advice
Education about another language or culture
Psychology
Things I am NOT looking for in non-fiction:
Advice and information without relevant research to back it up
Inapplicable advice written solely so that the author can “hear” themselves speak
Straight opinion pieces
LMs that the author does not actually care about the quality of
“Fluff” - which is subjective, so if you’re not sure, chat with me and let’s see!
